EXERCISE I.
Fill in adverbs or adjectives where necessary:
1. This roof looks (dangerous, dangerously) broken. We are repair-ing it.
2. She came (quiet, quietly) in and tiptoed to the baby.
3. John is a (careful, carefully) driver.
4. She laughed (happy, happily) when she heard it.
5. They miss their Motherland (terrible, terribly).
6. The car was damaged (bad, badly).
7. Mary is (serious, seriously) ill.
8. The doctor came (immediate, immediately).
9. She is always (quickly, quick) in taking decisions.
10. The day is really dull. It is raining (heavy, heavily).
EXERCISE II.
Here we have sentence adverbs, which give an opinion or atti-tude.
Fortunately, luckily, possibly, probably, actually, of course, in fact, surely, obviously, in my opinion, perhaps, evidently, maybe, undoubt-edly, clearly, frankly, honestly, naturally, officially, to my mind, ac-cordingly.
Use them in the sentences below.
1. … he came in t he time to get on the train.
2. … she won’t return the money so I need to borrow some.
3. … they brought the dictionaries and it was easy to translate the texts.
4. … you buy these stamps for his new collection and he won’t need buying the same ones.
5. … he is lying. He is always lying.
6. … they are to come in time there.
7. … Bob and I have been true friends for 20 years.
8. … it is the best view I’ve ever seen.
9. … she will bring all the necessary materials and cards.
10. … he will bring the kids home in time.
EXERCISE III.
Here we have the adverbs which have the same form as adjec-tives.
Fast, hard, high, low, deep, long, late, straight, early, well, often, daily, hourly, weekly, monthly, yearly, enough, far, ill, little, pretty, right, still, wrong.
Best, better, big, cheap, clean, close, cold, dead, deep, direct, dirty, easy, extra, far, fine, free, farther, inside, kindly, past, quick, quiet, slow, sure, thin, thick, tight, well, wide, etc.
Those adverbs, which are underlined can be found with — ly ending without a difference in meaning, but then they are more formal.
Example: Walk slow! (informal).
Walk slowly! (formal).
Choose the adjective or adverb:

11. This music sounds too … ( loud, loudly). Will you be so kind to stop it, please.
12. Marion looks … (good, well). She has been dieting for three months.
13. The painting seems … ( beautiful, beautifully). Will you buy it?
14. Our children get … ( angry, angrily), when they see this mess.
15. Mrs. Jameson became … ( sad, sadly) hearing that.
Note! The verbs to feel, to look, to taste, to appeal, to be, to be-come, to go, to get, to seem, to stay, to sound and to smell always take adjectives and never take adverbs.
EXERCISE IV.
Some adverbs change the meaning completely when they have –ly forms.
Short — shortly = soon; direct — directly = very soon, immediately; high — highly = very; most — mostly = mainly; near — nearly = almost; late — lately = recently; hardly ever = almost never; pretty = very; hardly, barely = almost not; deep — deeply = greatly; easy — easily = without difficulties; free — freely = without restrictions; complete — com-pletely = absolutely; last — lastly = finally; pretty — prettily = in a pretty way; sure — surely = without doubt; wrong — wrongly = unjustly;
Chose the adverb or adjective.

EXERCISE XI.
Adverbs which have the same form as adjectives, like fast, hard etc. form comparatives and superlatives with the help of sufixes -er;
-est; adverbs, which have the ending — ly form comparatives and su-perlatives with the help of the words more and the most;
Write the relevant adverbs in their comparative or superlative forms:
